From 2 May 2026, important updates to the New Zealand Building Code (G12/AS1 Amendment 14) require plumbing products used in contact with drinking water to meet new lead-free and dezincification resistant (DZR) standards.
These changes are designed to improve the safety and durability of plumbing systems in New Zealand homes and buildings.
What This Means
Under the updated Building Code requirements:
- Plumbing products in contact with drinking water must contain no more than 0.25% lead
- Copper alloy components under pressure must be dezincification resistant (DZR) to help prevent corrosion over time
- Products must be tested and certified to recognised international standards
These requirements apply to products such as taps, mixers, valves, fittings, and other water supply components.
What This Means for You
For homeowners and installers, these changes provide greater confidence that:
- Drinking water is safer
- Plumbing components are more durable
- Products installed today will meet current Building Code requirements
- Future maintenance and replacement risks are reduced
